1. The Birth of Laser Technology

  • In 1960: The invention of the laser by Theodore H. Maiman at Hughes Research Laboratories marked the beginning of laser technology. Maiman’s ruby laser was the first working laser, laying the groundwork for future developments.
  • In 1965: The first production laser cutting machine was created by the Western Electric Engineering Research Center. This machine was used to drill holes in diamond dies, marking one of the first practical applications of laser cutting.

2.Steps in the CNC Laser Cutting Process

Design Preparation

  • CAD Design: The first step is creating a design using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software. The design specifies the exact dimensions and shapes to be cut.
  • CAM Conversion: The CAD file is converted into a Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) file, which generates the G-code. G-code is a programming language that instructs the CNC machine on how to move.

Setup

  • Material Placement: The material to be cut is placed on the worktable. The type of material can vary widely, including metals, plastics, wood, and more.
  • Calibration: The laser cutting head and worktable are calibrated to ensure precision. This involves focusing the laser beam and setting the correct power, speed, and assist gas parameters.

Cutting

  • Laser Activation: The laser is activated, and the beam is focused through the cutting head onto the material.
  • CNC Movement: The CNC controller moves the laser cutting head and/or worktable according to the G-code instructions. The laser cuts through the material along the specified paths.
  • Assist Gas: Assist gas is blown through the nozzle to remove molten material from the cut area, cool the material, and prevent oxidation.
